BELGIAN ARTISTS 1945-1970

After World War II, Belgian women obtain voting right at last. But the Catholic Church remains extremely influential in society. The role of women is reduced to having children and taking care of their husband and household. In 1945, the Jeune Peinture Belge is born. Mig Quinet and Anne Bonnet are co-founders. In 1948, abstraction explodes in Belgium. Mig Quinet, Anne Bonnet, Francine Holley and Stella Van der Auwera all go to experiment with abstraction. Three women painters join the surrealist movement: Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes and Suzanne Van Damme. The Austrian Helène Riedel pursues a painter’s career in Brussels and is very present on the artistic scenery during 30 years.
