De 1945 \u00e0 1980, ils domineront la sc\u00e8ne culturelle. L\u2019expressionisme abstrait de Jackson Pollock et Mark Rothko est une r\u00e9action contre le totalitarisme, les horreurs de la guerre et l\u2019holocauste.<\/p><p>Ces artistes s\u2019inspirent aussi de leur propre identit\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine, avec les paysages grandioses et l\u2019art ethnique am\u00e9rindien. Ils se distinguent par leur dynamisme, leur vitalit\u00e9 et leur audace, autant que par l\u2019abstraction lyrique. Ils vont aussi s\u2019inspirer du surr\u00e9alisme. En effet, toute une s\u00e9rie de surr\u00e9alistes tels que Breton, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali et Andr\u00e9 Masson s\u2019\u00e9taient \u00e9tablis \u00e0 New-York en 1939, pour y rester jusqu\u2019en 1945. Ils y ont propag\u00e9 le mouvement aupr\u00e8s des artistes am\u00e9ricains. A l\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan, la CIA joue un r\u00f4le capital dans la promotion de l\u2019art am\u00e9ricain, aussi bien au sein des \u00c9tats-Unis qu\u2019en Europe, le Japon et l\u2019Am\u00e9rique Latine.
