BELGIAN WOMEN ARTISTS 1916 - 1945<\/h3>
\r\n

In 1919, women obtain voting rights in many countries. \u00a0They become empowered. Not so in France or Belgium. Nevertheless, in Paris a new type of woman explodes: la Gar\u00e7onne or the New Woman. A small number of Belgian woman artists goes to live in Paris and learns the new artistic currents. Upon their return to Brussels, Marthe Donas, Marthe Guillain, Jane Carion and Akarova import this modernism. Jenny Montigny becomes cosmopolitan in London, where she stays from 1914-1919. At her return to Flanders, she paints Flemish children in a timeless and an unprecedented way. In 1932 the Russian Elisabeth Ivanovsky comes to study at the Brussels art school La Cambre. She imports Russian constructivism and develops a new style of children\u2019s illustrations. Suzanne Fabry studies at the Brussels academy and realises fancy portraits in art d\u00e9co. Gilberte Dumont paints portraits and landscapes in a magical realistic way in Charleroi. The Flemish Yvonne Serruys pursuits a successful career as a sculptor in Paris. Ten artists are presented.
