BELGIAN WOMEN ARTISTS 1880 -1920<\/h3>

Brussels becomes a modern metropolis in 1880. This is due to the very rapid and important industrialisation of Belgium and the urban plans of King Leopold II. A rich new cosmopolitan elite starts patronizing an avant-garde art. Brussels becomes the capital of Art Nouveau. Many new artistic currents in plastic arts develop. Although it is very difficult for women to pursue an artistic career as a painter, a small number of women artists nevertheless manages to develop their talent and to become professional painters. We present ten of them: Berthe Art, Henriette Ronner-Knip, Louise De Hem, C\u00e9cile Douard, Alix d\u2019An\u00e9than, Virginie Demont-Breton, Juliette Wytsman, Anna Boch, Marguerite Verboeckhoven and Anna De Weert. Their styles and subjects are very varied and reflect their condition feminine in that era.<\/p> <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n
