Who is afraid of women-artists?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This new book gives an illustrated survey of 50 Belgian women artists from 1880 till now, with focus on the context of the social and art historical background and their condition f\u00e9minine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Between 1880 and today, talented Belgian women artists participated in new artistic currents such as neo-impressionism, impressionism, social realism, symbolism, the avant-garde in the 1920\u2019s, post-war abstraction, surrealism, minimalism, feminist art in the 1970\u2019s. These women artists remain little known and are hardly of not0 documented.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some artists have become known since very recently : Anna Boch, Marthe Donas, Evelyne Axell, Marthe W\u00e9ry, Lili Dujourie and Tapta. Others are still forgotten and remain undocumented: C\u00e9cile Douard, Elisabeth Ivanovsky, Suzanne Fabry, Gilberte Dumont, Jane Graverol, Stella Van der Auwera, Marianne Berenhaut. The art historical canon of plastic artists has to become more female. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since 1980 Belgium counts an increasing amount of contemporary women artists. A good dozen is well known by the public and it remains relevant to show these women and their work in this book.<\/strong><\/p> <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \t <\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t

The first chapter presents women-artists in Paris 1850-1890, amongst others, \u00a0Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Camille Claudel. The second chapter shows international modernist artists, active between 1900 and 1940, such as Sonia Delaunay, Ljubov Popova and Georgia O\u2019Keeffe. The third part tells the story of women artists in New York 1940-1970 (Joan Mitchell, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Krasner and Alice Neel). The fourth chapter focuses on feminist artists 1970-1990 in New York and Los Angeles. Their art is far less well known but forms the basis of contemporary art. The last chapter describes international contemporary artists such as Marlene Dumas, Marina Abramovic, Tracey Emin and Julie Mehretu.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
